As we wait for the completion of the three cités in Mâcon, Beaune, and Chablis, in spring 2023, some new videos are now available, revealing the key stages in the construction of the three sites.
The Cité in Chablis
In the heart of the village, close by the vines, the cité de Chablis is located in the Cellier du Petit Pontigny, an historic building that dates back to the Middle Ages.
Architect Claude Correia from the Atelier Correia Architectes & Associés was responsible for renovating this cozy 12th-century building and adding a contemporary extension covering some 800m².
The Cité in Beaune
The Rougeot Group demonstrated some incredible technical prowess with this 24-meter-high gem of a building. With its 2,000-ton spiral construction, it is another example of eco-responsible building thanks to an ecological approach that is part of a more global take on sustainable tourism.
The Cité in Mâcon
With its majestic screw press construction, the cité de Mâcon stands like a beacon on the banks of the Saône and is perfectly integrated into the urban space. With a tower standing 14 meters high, it offers some exceptional views over this beautiful landscape.
Each of these scenographic experiences will take you on a truly multi-sensory discovery of the world of wine. You will explore the history of this great winegrowing region shaped by human hand and discover how each of the cities is bound to the local landscape.
Let yourself be guided by the words of winegrowers, winemakers, and ambassadors of Bourgogne.
Open your eyes and ears to enjoy the in-depth audiovisual content to accompany your discovery of how this land came into being, the patchwork of landscapes and soils, the Climats, the work in the vines, the art of winemaking, the subtlety and elegance of the wines themselves, not forgetting the region’s legendary conviviality, culture, and traditions.
What’s more, each tour includes a commented tasting, so that you can get to the very heart of the matter!
There is also a dedicated tour specially designed for the youngest visitors, with plenty of hiding places and fun activities around the theme of the history of winegrowing in the Bourgogne region.
The 37th Chablis Wine Competition bestows 24 medals
The Chablis Wine Competition, organized by the Office du Chablis in partnership with the Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB), ran on Saturday 14 January. It was presided over by Bourgogne wine expert, Jasper Morris.
This year, the 71-strong jury tasted the 2021 vintage of the Petit Chablis, Chablis, and Chablis Premier Cru AOCs, and the 2020 vintage of the Chablis Grand Cru AOC. They picked 24 winners from 259 submissions. There were fewer entrants this year, due to the low volumes harvested in 2021.
The Maison 1896 restaurant and hotel sits in the heart of Beaune, in a building belonging to the Drouhin family that neighbors the Maison Joseph Drouhin. With its 16 luxury bedrooms, it is set to open in 2023, and will be all about conviviality and sharing, with a focus on wine tasting. The atmosphere will be unique, giving the feel of a family home.
The building’s façade has been restored with local limestone and Bourgogne stone, and its art deco style continues inside with ingenious staircases, skylights, stained-glass windows and a unique private terrace.
The 14 bedrooms and two suites are located on three levels, some of which offer incredible views over the rooftops of Beaune. They will be decorated with locally sourced objects and materials.
The restaurant and bar will make up the heart of the hotel. A glass atrium in the courtyard will be a unique location for alfresco dining year-round in Beaune. An intimately cozy private salon will also welcome private diners, wine tastings, and other special events.
The Maison Louis Latour was founded in 1797 and has always made its independence a point of honor. Louis-Fabrice Latour skillfully preserved its family spirit, so loved by its shareholders, partners, stakeholders, and customers, whilst ensuring its growth over the past 30 years.
Its new director, Florent Latour, will bring continuity to the role, working in close cooperation with the family, the Board of Directors, and all employees of the Latour Group. In particular, he will focus on preparing for the arrival of the twelfth generation at the helm.
“My brother is greatly missed, both as a man and as a leader. He left his mark on the Maison Latour and on Bourgogne, and we are aware of how much we owe him. My aim is to work with the team to continue what Louis-Fabrice started, in a spirit of trust and continuity.”
Maison Champy - Pasteur and Wine: A homage to the oldest négoce
On the occasion of Louis Pasteur’s bicentenary, the oldest House in Bourgogne pays tribute to his work on wine, in collaboration with the Pasteur Institute.
Founded in 1720, Maison Champy is the oldest wine house in Bourgogne. Six generations of the same family succeeded each other at its head before the XXth century. Initially specialised in wine trading and barrel making, it became the first « négociant » in the region by purchasing land and vines during the French Revolution. Throughout the XIXth century, it experienced significant commercial growth in the region, in France country and internationally.
As a defender of the terroirs, Louis Pasteur turned to the winegrowers of the Jura and Burgundy regions, and inspired Maison Champy in Beaune, which was known for its ever growing desire to improve the quality of its wines. The scientist took an interest in wine diseases, which he studied, before coming to the conclusion that they were due to oxygen and pathogenic agents contained in the air.
An invention will directly result from Louis Pasteur’s research and will bring this method to winegrowers: the pasteuriser.
Two centuries after the birth of this great scientist, Maison Champy, which was awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) label in 2021, the only estate to have such a distinction in Bourgogne to date, pays tribute to the inventor, who was also an active supporter of Bourgogne wines.
The Albert Sounit wine house in Rully was created in 1945. It has been owned by Danes since 1993, with Knud Kjellerup as the majority stakeholder. Over the past 30 years, the business has enjoyed significant growth, mainly with the acquisition of the Domaine Bernollin in Jully-les-Buxy in 2005, along with buildings in Rully.
In September 2022, after three years of transition, Søren Nørbjerg became the main shareholder, with the aim of growing the reputation of the Maison Albert Sounit. A new tasting room has already been created in Rully.
The négoce has 16 hectares of vines and buys in the equivalent of 10 hectares of grapes, all of which are vinified and aged in its winery in Jully-les-Buxy, which has been recently extended.
Albert Sounit’s strength lies in producing equal quantities of Crémant de Bourgogne and still wines. Its next objective is to obtain organic certification.
Tastings are offered from Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, by appointment only.
Bourgogne vs. Burgundy: to re-affirm their identity, the region and the producers are reverting back to the original French iteration of the name, Bourgogne.
