162nd Hospices de Beaune Wine auction: Honor to the children and tribute to Louis-Fabrice Latour.
The 2022 edition of the Hospices de Beaune wine auction, a flagship annual event for both the Bourgogne wines and the wider wine world, begins on Sunday 20 November at 2.30pm in Les Halles in Beaune.
The Hospices de Beaune will pay tribute to Louis-Fabrice Latour and offer for sale a unique Pièce des Président, a 228-liters barrel of Corton Grand Cru.
The Domaine des Hospices de Beaune has vinified and selected a part of its red Corton Grand Cru production, and then housed it in a pièce specially made by the cooperage of the Maison Louis Latour. It is thus in this unique 228-liter barrel that this Grand Cru will age.
This year’s event, hosted by Sotheby’s, will be the 162nd edition of the auction. The Hospices estate covers 60 hectares and is in its second year of conversion to organic cultivation. Monies raised from the wines it produces have been used to fund some major investments, and this year’s “Pièce des Présidents”, a barrel containing 228 liters of an exceptional cuvée, will be sold to raise money for two charities supporting children’s causes:
- The Princesse Margot charity, created in 2012 by Muriel Hattab, which supports children with cancer and their families.
- Vision du Monde, which helps vulnerable children escape extreme poverty by giving them the means to life a full life.
French actor Benoit Magimel, and French TV braoadcaster Flavie Flament will be present to raise the stakes in the name of Vision du Monde. A third personality is expected to represent Princess Margot.
In the image of the very beautiful vintage 2022, 802 pièces of wine divided into 51 cuvées will be put on sale. Among these, two new cuvées:
- Corton Grand Cru, cuvée Les Renardes
- Beaune Premier Cru, Clos des Mouches, cuvée Hugues et Louis Bétault

The final stages of heavy construction are underway, with secondary works and the creation of the spiral walkway to follow, along with the installation of the “suspended” bridge. This structure, designed by architect Emmanuelle Andreani from Siz'Ix architects, which will provide access to the panoramic terrace, is a high-precision project indeed.
The multimedia content and the scenography for the 1,100m² immersive and sensory visitor trail are also in the process of being finalized by scenographic agency Alice dans les Villes.
The city of Beaune, which is managing the project, was keen to adopt a sustainable tourism approach with an eco-responsible building that is fully integrated into the new Parc de la Chartreuse.
This architectural gem fits the bill, thanks to its bio-sourced materials, such as hemp concrete for the construction of the wood-frame facades, the use of local geo-sourced materials like Comblanchien stone for the base, earth from Mont Saint-Vincent for the interior coating, and lime for the exterior coating and to bind the insulation.
It will also have the capacity to produce renewable energy, and it will be surrounded by around 500 newly-planted trees along with 100 vines.
This green approach had led the project to be awarded E+C-® Positive Energy (E3) and Carbon Reduction (C2) labels, along with the Bio-sourced Building tag.

The Auxey-Duresses AOC [pronounced ‘Ossy Duress’] is a Village appellation from the Côte de Beaune. It is home to nine Premier Cru Climats, and produces mostly red wines, along with some whites.
Auxey-Duresses is located at the opening to a valley which, from the Côte de Beaune, heads down into the Hautes Côtes on the road to La Rochepot and Autun. Wine has long been made here, with evidence dating back to Celtic and Roman activity. It was once a dependency of the abbey of Cluny, and activity here was divided between grain production and winemaking. Today, it is mainly focused on the latter, producing an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée created in 1937.
The Bourdon Mountain, with its very stony marl-limestone base, gives Auxey-Duresses wines all their character.
Auxey-Duresses reds have a lively ruby red color, a well-balanced bouquet that is rich in red berries like blackcurrant, blackberry, and blueberry, and floral aromas of peony. In the mouth, it is sophisticated and smooth right from the attack, measured, fleshy, and very pleasing.
The whites have instant visual appeal with their light straw color. They reveal aromas of fresh almond and reinette apple. In the mouth, they offer lovely biscuity notes combined with touches of gunflint.
Sommelier’s tips:
With their measured, velvety tannins, red Auxey-Duresses wines make the perfect partner for white meats. These charming wines dazzle with fine hams and cold cuts, veal, roast pork, brochettes, and even rabbit, but also with well-seasoned pasta dishes or risotto with poultry. Grilled fish also make a great match.
Crisp and lively white Auxey-Duresses wines are rounded, with a lasting finish. This makes them perfect to pair with shellfish or fish in spicy sauces, slow-cooked ratatouilles, and seafood gratins. With the cheese course, these wines are best served with Gruyeres, blue cheeses, and certain goat cheeses.

“La Cuverie by Comte Liger-Belair” set to open in Vosne-Romanée in November 2022
The Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair has thought long and hard about creating a destination to host a range of services responding to the needs of locals, wine estate employees, and tourists alike.
The building, which was originally a winegrower's house complete with vat room, is located at 1 rue des Communes in Vosne-Romanée. It has been totally refurbished to allow the creation of a wine bar, a grocery offering local and organic produce, a café, guest rooms, and even a post office. The idea for the project stemmed from a desire to breathe new life into the village of Vosne-Romanée by developing services for both local people and tourists from around the world.
More than 1,000 wines on the menu: The Cuverie will also have a clear focus on wine tourism, thanks to its wine bar with an ambitious wine list. This will include all producers, both winegrowers and négociants, in the Vosne-Romanée appellation who wish to be included. A range of other wines from organic producers in Bourgogne and those from a selection of French estates certified in biodynamic agriculture will also be on offer. The aim is to offer a Vosne-Romanée wine by the glass each week.
Check out the “La Cuverie by Comte Liger-Belair” Instagram and Facebook pages.
