“Objectif Climat”: Adelphe and Bourgogne are building a unique pilot project
The Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB) partners with recycling experts Adelphe to build a methodology with the aim of reaching complete carbon neutrality.
The French wine industry is deeply concerned by climate change and is fully committed to taking an ever-more environmentally friendly approach.
Within the framework of France’s aim to become carbon neutral by 2050, the BIVB and recycling consultant Adelphe are working together over the first half of 2022 on a methodology called “Objectif Climat” to identify ways to achieve carbon neutrality across Bourgogne.
This project will involve everyone across the wine industry both upstream and down.
The “Objectif Climat” methodology will be organized into three stages:
Measure: This begins with the carbon footprint analysis of the Bourgogne wine industry that was carried out by a certified organization in 2021. Then, additional information was collected and discussions held with industry stakeholders who provided additional information, in order to draw up a strategy. This phase ran between the end of 2021 and early 2022.
Reduce: Next, the carbon reduction trajectory for the entire value chain will be defined, including packaging, and any residual emissions to be neutralized will be identified.
Compensate: This phase involves implementing actions to offset incompressible greenhouse gas emissions.
For this third and final stage, Adelphe and the BIVB are focusing on encouraging the implementation of carbon capture projects in the region. This will be done directly in the vineyards (including adding plant cover or hedge planting) and from agricultural practices such as agroforestry or forestry projects.
These projects will be entitled to receive the “Low Carbon” label from the Ministry of Ecological Transition within the framework of the method currently being developed by the French Institute of Vine and Wine (IFV) for French viticulture.
This one-hour show invites press and wine industry professionals to find out the key information they need about an appellation and what makes it unique, along with reports and interviews from winegrowers.
During the first part, different videos introduce all the specificities of the AOC. Then, the second part is dedicated to a guided tasting of several wines. Participants can taste them simultaneously with an expert from the École des Vins de Bourgogne, who will answer all the questions live via Twitter using the #BIVBRDV hashtag.
The show will be broadcast on 30 March and is by invitation only. For more information or to register, please contact Cannelle Peulot: cannelle.peulot@bivb.com
Wine Tourism: Follow the guide
A new edition of the Vignobles & Découvertes cellars guide is now available, to help visitors experience the very best of wine-related tourism in Bourgogne.
The bilingual French and English Vignobles & Découvertes guide has been designed to help those wishing to visit the many wine cellars in Bourgogne. It brings together information about some 246 estates, négociants, and cooperative cellars that have been awarded the Vignobles & Découvertes label.
The guide is packed with useful information including languages spoken, accommodation and dining details where offered, and details of any environmental approaches undertaken by different producers.
It also includes a map of the Bourgogne region presenting must-visit sites and on the reverse, a selection of mini-maps of each “Route des Vins” wine trail. The guide has been produced in partnership with Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Tourisme.
In addition, the guide features a presentation of the Cité des Climats et Vins de Bourgogne which will be opening its doors in early 2023 in Beaune, Chablis, and Mâcon.
The guide showcases industry initiatives in terms of social and environmental responsibility, but also calls for tourists to respect the people who work in the vineyards.
The festive spirit of the locals is also featured, with links to an online calendar of wine festivals and a reminder of the notion of responsible festivities to ensure conviviality along with public safety.
The various sections offer educational information about wine, vineyards, appellations, varietals, Climats, and the Vignobles et Découvertes label.
Regions are classified by color so you can quickly find cellars, festivities, and wine trails by geographical location. Moreover, the guide also features an infographic presenting key figures from the Bourgogne winegrowing region.
The guide is available for download here (you can also ask for a paper edition).
A raffle and some exceptional cuvées for the Saint-Vincent Tournante de Bourgogne
The eight cuvées from the Saint-Vincent Tournante celebrations at Puligny-Montrachet, Corpeau, and Blagny are waiting to be tasted on 19 and 20 March.
The 78th edition of the Saint-Vincent Tournante de Bourgogne will take place on 19 and 20 March in the villages of Puligny-Montrachet, Corpeau, and Blagny. The theme of the celebration will be the four elements of earth, water, fire, and air: Elements common to all great Bourgogne wines.
The Saint-Vincent Tournante is held in Bourgogne every year. It celebrates Saint Vincent, the patron saint of winegrowers. This festive event symbolizes solidarity amongst winemakers and is open to everyone, including wine lovers and fans of the Bourgogne region’s traditions.
Among other highlights of the event, visitors will be able to discover eight specially-made cuvées:
Bourgogne Côte d’Or 2018 in red and white, Puligny-Montrachet 2017 and 2018, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru 2018, and three mystery cuvées of Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, 2017, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Folatières, 2018, and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Terroirs de Blagny, 2018.
These wines were produced from harvests carried out by volunteers, or from donated grapes or must, hailing from 63 estates and vinified collectively in Corpeau, Puligny-Montrachet, and Blagny. Some 18,000 bottles will be uncorked for the event.
An exceptional raffle of some exceptional wines
Thanks to donations from multiple estates, the organizers will be holding a unique raffle featuring wines from the Montrachet hill, with some 100 Grand Crus bottles up for grabs.

Chablis Wine Competition: 29 medals awarded this year
The 2022 Chablis wine competition was organized according to strict social distancing measures and saw 29 wines scoop an award.
The 36th edition of the Chablis wine competition took place on Saturday 15 January in Beine.
This annual competition is organized by the Office du Chablis in partnership with the Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB). The winning wines go on to represent the Chablis region for the following year at national and international promotional events.
The wines are evaluated by a diverse jury comprising journalists, restaurateurs, sommeliers, traders, enologists, and confirmed wine lovers. The judging involves two phases, with the winning wines from a first tasting going forward for sampling by a “super jury” that names the winners.
This year’s 29 winners were selected from 262 samples submitted.
Every year, the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges hosts an auction during which money is raised for a selected charity from the sale of the “Pièce de Charité” or “charity barrel”.
And for the first time ever, this year’s barrel will be a blend of the estate’s nine Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Crus, marrying the qualities of Climats from the north with those from the south, those of the upper slopes with the lower ones, and those of old vines together with those from very old ones. Through this new cuvée, the Hospices de Nuits is seeking to express the character of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation and underline the imprint of the 2021 vintage, which embodies all the character of Bourgogne.
The Pièce de Charité will be sold to raise money for APF France Handicap, France’s leading organization for helping and defending the rights of disabled people. Its patron is French singer Elodie Frégé.
The 2021 harvest resulted in 109 barrels for auction, of which 108 are red and one white.
The 61st Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges wine auction will take place on Sunday 20 March at 2:30pm at the Château du Clos de Vougeot. It will be broadcast live via www.interencheres.com and hosted by Dijon-based auctioneers Cortot et Associés.
The 2022 Tastevinage event will bring the week of the Grands Jours de Bourgogne to a close. For this, the 109th edition, Daniel Picouly, a famous French writer, will be the tasting’s patron.
This is a particularly symbolic choice as his latest book, “Les Larmes du Vin” or “Tears of Wine”, published in January 2022 by Éditions Albin Michel, explores the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, and in particular his induction as a knight.
The Côtes du Couchois, a geographical denomination of the Bourgogne AOC, is located to the south of Les Maranges on the Côte de Beaune. It produces some lovely red wines for those in the know, but its reputation is increasing each year, along with its production.
The appellation has just revealed its new logo, which represents the renewal its winegrowers are seeking, and their ambitions for the future, encapsulated in three symbols:
- The shield shape evokes the history and architecture of this terroir, closely connected to the Dukes of Bourgogne
- The “vivre”, an apocalyptic beast that is part-snake and part-prehistoric monster, and is celebrated by a huge party every 20 years
- And the vines along with two “Cs”, synonymous with unity and solidarity.
The logo was created by local artist Thierry Pajor, from the T-in agency in Mâcon.
In total, there are some 50 winegrowers currently operating across the entire Bourgogne Côtes du Couchois appellation zone, although only 20 are currently producing the AOC. In 2020, around 28 hectares of vines were dedicated to the Bourgogne Côtes du Couchois appellation, rising to around 50 hectares for the 2021 vintage.
The winegrowers’ union is currently working on an application to have its white wines enjoy the Bourgogne Côte du Couchois appellation, which is currently reserved for red wines. The next step will be to obtain Village classification for these wines with their complex yet light aromatic profile.
Famille Piffaut Vins et Domaines and Gabriel Boudier to merge their expertise
Two key players from the Bourgogne region’s worlds of wine and spirits have teamed up.
Famille Piffaut Vins et Domaines (FPVD) has announced its merger with Gabriel Boudier, producer of crème de cassis from Dijon, part of a range of premium spirits. Together, they are now one of the biggest wine and spirits companies in the Bourgogne region.
The Piffaut family is one of the biggest vineyard owners in Bourgogne with some 280 hectares of vines to their name. They join forces with François and Yves Battault, owners of Gabriel Boudier. François and Yves Battault are now shareholders in FPVD and join the Supervisory Board of the new entity, chaired by Eric Piffaut. As General Managers of Gabriel Boudier, they will support the smooth integration of the company into the new group.
The consolidation of a regional offer of Bourgogne wines, Crémant de Bourgogne and spirits will strengthen the group's influence in France and internationally, due to the particularly dynamic image of this region in the world of premium alcoholic beverages.
Achieving a significant size will allow the group to build a real alternative to the major players in certain parts of the sector.
Bourgogne vs. Burgundy: to re-affirm their identity, the region and the producers are reverting back to the original French iteration of the name, Bourgogne.
