Digital is clearly becoming a key tool for offering a range of ways to get together and allowing us to better respond to your expectations.
It has already enabled us to make distance learning available to all via our e-learning program, our videos on IGTV, and via les Explorateurs de Bourgogne. We have also made our on-screen training and tasting sessions even more vibrant and contemporary, such as “Rendez-Vous avec les vins de Bourgogne” and “Escape to Bourgogne”. Similarly, location-specific events like our various Bourgogne Weeks have been opened up to the world via social media.
The possibilities are endless and we continue to explore them, as you will see through this newsletter.
Described as the “Golden Gateway to the Côte de Nuits”, the Marsannay AOC extends across the communes of Chenôve, Marsannay-la-Côte, and Couchey. Vines have been grown here since the 7th century. The Abbey of Bèze, the bishopric of Autun, the dukes of Bourgogne, and many others all owned vines here. Marsannay wines featured on the tables of Louis XIV and Louis XVI, and certain Climats even enjoyed a classification equivalent to today’s Grands Crus through until the 19th century.
Red wines from the Marsannay appellation have an intense color, with a generous fruity bouquet of morello cherry, strawberry, blackcurrant, and blueberry. In the mouth, the attack is powerful and generous, harmonizing with a fatty finish and lovely length. The whites reveal the full gamut of citrus and white blossom like hawthorn and acacia. The mouth, which is often broad and rounded, opens up to reveal a fine mineral structure with sustained length.
As for Marsannay rosé, their fruity tenderness expresses pêche de vigne and gooseberry aromas, and their characteristic vigorous indulgence on the tongue makes them perfect for the summer season!
Sommelier’s tips: Marsannay reds are natural partners for red meat such as rib steak with marrow, hanger steak with shallots, or even ostrich. Or pair them with river fish like pike, pikeperch, or stuffed carp. They also go very well with chop suey, sautéed vegetables, quality cold cuts, feathered game, and cow milk cheeses. Older vintages are great with Époisses, Munster, or any other mature cheese.
Marsannay whites are ideal with white meats. Try them with chicken à la Gaston Gérard, veal, or filet mignon of pork with a mustard sauce. Asian cuisine such as sushi brings out the chiseled aromas of these Chardonnays, and in addition to classic sea fish dishes, some years in the cellar produces white Marsannays that marry wonderfully with goat cheeses.
Lastly, Marsannay rosé wines can be enjoyed throughout a meal, with summer barbecues, mixed salads, fine cold cuts, white meats, crab, or red mullet. Spicy, Asian, and Mediterranean dishes also provide great pairings. And after a few years, why not try a Marsannay rosé as a divine accompaniment to dessert!
Sweden: Exponential growth over the past two years
The Swedish market, hungry for Bourgogne wines, continues to grow and mature.
In 2019, Sweden retained its place as the ninth biggest export market for Bourgogne wines in terms of revenue, with 2.9% of total export revenues. It was ranked sixth in terms of volume, just behind Japan, with 6% of total exports.
Imports of wine to Sweden from around the world have grown continuously over the past decade, increasing by 11% between 2010 and 2019.
Key figures 2019 for Bourgogne wines in Sweden:
Exports: 5.35 million bottles (up 6.6% over 2018), for 30.64 million euros (up 5.6% over 2018), by volume:
- Still white wines: 56%
- Still red wines: 28%
- Crémant de Bourgogne: 16%
Despite only accounting for 4.1% of French AOC production, Bourgogne was the leading French region on the Swedish market, accounting for 25% of all AOC exports.
These strong results seem to be repeating in 2020 with a strong performance in the first quarter of 2020, up 42.8% by volume and 41.4% in terms of revenue. The country seems to have been not too badly impacted by the pandemic.
This range of Instagram videos feature master-sommeliers, journalists, bloggers, and Official Bourgogne Wines Ambassadors, either individually or combined. They are all linked by their desire to share their knowledge of Bourgogne wines and in particular, these little-known gems that offer an unbeatable quality-price-pleasure ratio. Perhaps you might know some of them: They are the Régionale appellations with an additional geographical denomination.
There are 13 geographical denominations for the appellation Bourgogne and 27 for Mâcon. You can discover them exclusively on IGTV and Instagram – don’t forget to follow us!
Bourgogne wines return to Hong Kong
Join us in October for two days rich in discovery.
Pencil it in your diaries: Bourgogne wines will be back in Hong Kong on 13 and 14 October 2020 for two days that promise to be action-packed.
The first day will be dedicated to the “One Day for Bourgogne” event. Industry professionals and wine journalists are invited to discover the 2017 and 2018 vintages along with some little-known gems from Bourgogne.
The festivities continue the following day with a masterclass and free tasting, both dedicated to the Bourgogne region’s little-known Régionale and Village appellations. This event will provide the change to discover some new wines with an unbeatable quality-price-pleasure ratio.
Japanese wine industry professionals – take your marks!
Bourgogne and Chablis wines will be making a flying visit to Japan on 28 September for a day of tasting and training dedicated to industry professionals, including distributors, sommeliers, and eCommerce agents. The day will include a masterclass and a free tasting.
Two unique occasions for discovering some lesser-known Bourgogne wines
The Mâcon plus a geographical denomination and Irancy appellations will be the stars of the next edition of the “Rendez-vous avec les vins de Bourgogne” show.
The first is mainly white and located at the southern end of Bourgogne. The second is 100% red, and one of the most northerly. Both are very different from one another, but they have one thing in common: They both are undeservedly little-known.
To do them justice, we are dedicating an edition of the interactive “Rendez-vous avec les vins de Bourgogne” show to each of them, on 18 November for Mâcon and 2 December for Irancy.
The shows last one hour and are divided into two sections:
- The first 20 minutes is dedicated to presenting the theme, with reports and interviews with winegrowers.
- The second part involves a guided live tasting of several wines. Participants in the various sessions organized around the world will take part simultaneously with Jean-Pierre Renard, expert trainer at the École des Vins de Bourgogne.
- At the end of the show, Jean-Pierre will answer questions asked by participants via Twitter, using the hashtag #BIVBRDV.
The show is broadcast via satellite in 10 countries, in English at 9am, 11am, 6pm, and 10pm; and in French at 4pm (all times are French).
If you would like to take part, check with your local Official Ambassador to see whether he or she will be hosting a screening. A full list of Official Ambassadors is available here.
All the shows screened since 2014 are available on our YouTube channel.
These new-style masterclasses have been developed thanks to a partnership between the Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB) and the Napa Valley Wine Academy and are tailored to California-based professionals.
They will be hosted by Jay Youmans, Marianne Frantz, James Barlow, and Tanya Morning Star Darling.
Although it is now too late to sign up to take part, you can still watch the shows as they will be recorded and then made available on the Napa Valley Wine Academy website.
