On April 2, Donald Trump made waves by announcing steep tariffs on imports from across the globe - 20% in particular for Europe. Though expected, the decision rattled international markets.
When the new tariffs went into effect on April 9, the industry welcomed with relief the news that, for Europe, they would be scaled back to 10% for a 90-day period. This opens the door for transatlantic trade to resume with the number one export market for Bourgogne wines.
20% isn’t a total stop - but a slowdown was inevitable
As early as April 3, the industry issued a statement regretting the decision to impose additional 20% tariffs on all European products. The move would severely impact exporters, their partners, and also American consumers.
For Bourgogne wine producers, total losses could approach €100 million.
"We’ve seen this before," recalls Laurent Delaunay, President of the Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB). “During his first term, Donald Trump introduced a 25% tariff on still bottled wines in 2019 as part of the Boeing-Airbus dispute. The effect was immediate: our imports plummeted 15% by volume in 2020, leading to a 22% drop in revenue!”
Now the key question is: what happens at the end of the 90-day reprieve? The ball is in the negotiators’ court.

Brazil – The Press is Invited to Take a Closer Look at Bourgogne Wines
Until now, Bourgogne wines had never carried out a communications campaign in Brazil. The Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB) has decided to take the leap in 2025, targeting a market where distribution of its appellations is steadily growing (see the “Economic Update” below).
In mid-May, Anne Moreau, spokesperson for Bourgogne wines, will travel to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro for two events dedicated to Brazilian press and influencers.
Each event will spotlight Bourgogne’s lesser-known Village appellations and offer a fresh perspective on the Chablis AOC. With this initiative, the BIVB aims to highlight the full diversity of its appellations. At a time when Brazilian consumers are showing growing interest in quality wines, the campaign seeks to guide them toward a more accessible Bourgogne - one that aligns with the habits of Generation Y and millennials.

Bourgogne and Brazil: A Growing Export Success
Bourgogne wines continue their upward trajectory in Brazil - a dynamic market where demand for these appellations keeps growing.
In 2024, Brazil is the leading South American destination for Bourgogne wines, with exports up by +17.5% in volume and +21.8% in value compared to 2023.
White wines - led by Chablis and the Bourgogne AOC - clearly dominate the market, accounting for 77% of exported volumes. Bourgogne whites are winning over Generation X and millennials, who favor quality even when budgets are tight. Growth in the Off-Trade distribution channel (+11.8% since 2019) is reinforcing this trend, cementing Bourgogne wines in new consumption habits.
The recent reduction of trade barriers with the European Union could further accelerate this momentum, opening new opportunities for Bourgogne producers.
The 2024 harvest came in at 1.21 million hectoliters—a sharp drop compared to the exceptional 2023 vintage (-36.5%) but still well above the 2021 level (+20.8%). Thanks to healthy stock levels and two generous prior vintages, supply remains sufficient to meet market demand without pressure.
After two slower years, exports bounced back strongly (+8.9% in volume, +9.3% in value), surpassing €1.645 billion for the first time.
These positive results remain fragile, however, amid ongoing global uncertainty and unresolved questions surrounding new U.S. tariffs (see above).
Tucked into the junction of two valleys, Pernand-Vergelesses sits high on the slopes of the Côte de Beaune. Most of the vineyards face east, with some oriented to the northeast. Mid-slope, the stony limestone soils are ideal for Pinot Noir. Higher up, brown and yellowish marl soils are the domain of Chardonnay.
Wine profiles Red wines: Pernand-Vergelesses displays a deep ruby hue with intense purple highlights. The nose opens with aromas of strawberry, raspberry, and violet. As it ages, it develops notes of forest floor and spice. Fleshy and full-bodied, its roundness brings the harmony needed to shine at the table.
White wines: Pale gold and white-gold tones deepen with age. Aromas of white flowers (hawthorn, acacia) evolve into notes of amber, honey, and spice. On the palate, it is mineral-driven, balanced, and highly charming.
Food pairings:
With its firm yet beautifully integrated tannins, the red pairs naturally with flavorful meats such as roast veal, braised or sauced dishes, leg of lamb, game birds, and grilled pork. It also makes an excellent match for roast beef. On the cheeseboard: Mont d’Or, Vacherin, Tomme de Savoie, Reblochon, and Cîteaux. Serving temperature: 15–16°C (59–61°F)
As for the white: lively, light, and vibrant, it’s a perfect match for sushi—enhancing their flavors while respecting their delicate, contrasting textures. It also pairs well with freshwater fish in white sauce, seafood pastas or risottos, and cheeses from the Gruyère, blue, or goat’s milk families. Serving temperature: 10–12°C (50–54°F)
Bourgogne vs. Burgundy: to re-affirm their identity, the region and the producers are reverting back to the original French iteration of the name, Bourgogne.
