QANOPEE: Investing in the future of Bourgogne wines
Three wine-industry bodies behind this unique and innovative project
QANOPEE (QuArt NOrd-Est PrÉmultiplication collectivE) is the name given to this major innovation project for Bourgogne wines. The quest for quality and guaranteed perfect health of vine plants led the wine bodies of the Beaujolais, Champagne, and Bourgogne regions to invest in a project for the production of grafts and rootstocks in closed, bioclimatic greenhouses. This type of greenhouse is a new departure in the production of vine plants.
QANOPEE is the first investment of its kind made by the trade bodies. It will be located in Champagne, in the village of Blancs-Coteaux, south of Epernay. The project is steered by a non-profit that combines the three aforementioned wine regions, presided over by Thiébault Huber, president of the Confédération des Appellations et des Vignerons de Bourgogne (CAVB).
When we think of Beaune, we envisage the stunning architecture of the Hôtel-Dieu, or the vast network of silent cellars where local wine houses receive thousands of visitors each year.
But Beaune is also home to one of the most extensive vineyard on the Côte. Once known as “Pinot Vermeil” by the dukes of Bourgogne, the red wines have been reputed since the high Middle Ages for its youthful temperament, and its bouquet which packs a punch. The whites are scarcer, but bring out the best in these terroirs favorable for the Chardonnay varietal. Beaune is a Village appellation on the Côte de Beaune which comprises 42 Climats classed as Premier Cru. The Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée was created in 1936.
Depending on the position of the vineyards, nuances appear in the Beaune appellation: To the north of the town, the wines tend to be intense and powerful; to the south, they are typically soft and rounded.
The red wines have a bright, lively color which promises aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry, cherry and redcurrant, underscored with humus and undergrowth. Truffle, leather, and spices develop with age. When young, the Beaune appellation offers a charming palette of crisp fresh grapes. Firm, forthright, it opens out into a very pleasing, well-structured wine.
The white wines have a soft color with greenish tinges. The bouquet is of almonds and other nuts, with fern and white blossom. Honey and cinnamon are also notes that can be found. The Beaune appellation is usually drunk quite young for those who like the fruit, or left to mature for those who prefer a fatty, richer wine.
Lunch is ready!
Red: The Beaune appellation exhibits great aromatic power and a full-bodied texture, which makes it ideal with full-flavored meats such as game, either roast or in casseroles. It suits stronger cheeses such as époisses, soumaintrain, munster, or maroilles.
White: Its crispness and floral nature go wonderfully with poultry and veal in cream sauce, fish tajines, grilled sea fish, and even sushi. After a few years’ ageing, a white Beaune makes a fabulous match for cheeses like cîteaux, comté, and certain goat cheeses.

If you are a working sommelier, member of the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers (CAPS), we are offering the opportunity to follow an online training program run by the Académie des vins de Bourgogne and developed by the Bourgogne Wine Board (BIVB), in partnership with the association, which will take place from March to June.
Comprising three modules, this program will allow you to develop your knowledge about Bourgogne wines in a fun and interactive way. Each month, you will be invited to participate in a quiz with your fellow sommeliers. Those who finish in the top 50 will win a tasting kit for a masterclass. A bursary of €2,000 will be given to the participant who finishes top at the end of the program.
The annual wine auction is the opportunity for the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges estate to support a charity by donating the proceeds from the sale of a pièce of wine, known as the “Benefactors’ Cuvée”. The actress Constance Dollé will preside over the event in 2023.
For the 62nd edition, the Domaine des Hospices will be supporting the charity Les Blouses Roses which, through the proceeds of the sale, will undertake actions to help children hospitalized in Dijon and those with a disability (sessions of animal mediation and music therapy).
The 2022 vintage will be the star of the show: The wines will finish ageing with négociants acting for the buyers.
According to the estate’s winemaker, Jean-Marc Moron, vinification unfolded smoothly, with regular and rapid fermentation. The harvest filled the winery with intense fruit aromas. The juice quickly took on color, and two-to-three weeks of maceration allowed the cuvées to attain the required balance. “We used a lot of long pumping over for gentle extraction,” he notes.
This year, the members of the group will be hosting influencers for a tasting of recent vintages of Bourgogne Aligoté and Bouzeron, along with a selection of older vintages.
This event will be run in conjunction with estates from the Jura who are promoting the little-known red varietals of Poulsard and Trousseau.
