Find out more about the Montagny appellation
It is said that the monks of Cluny preferred the wines of Montagny on the Côte Chalonnaise than any other…
The wines:
This Village appellation on the Côte Chalonnaise has 49 Climats classified as Premier Cru. Exclusively white, Montagny offers the classic features of the Chardonnay grape in the Bourgogne region: It is clear and golden in color with hints of green, turning more buttercup yellow with age. It generally offers aromas of acacia, hawthorn, honeysuckle, and bramble blossom. More lively examples also offer touches of lemongrass and gunflint. In the mouth, these are vibrant wines with a youthful character and pleasantly rich spicy aromas. Its finesse and delicacy in terms of taste are matched with a structured and durable framework.
Sommelier's tips:
Montagny wines are subtle and rich with delicate notes. They are best paired with balanced dishes of comparable aromatic intensity such as veal in white sauce. In terms of marine matches, try it with steamed or poached shellfish, or fine fresh fish that is fried, grilled, or better still, simply steamed. Montagny is also perfect with paella, with the dish’s wide range of aromas underscored by the lovely richness of the wine. As for cheeses, Montagny marries marvelously with goat's cheese, Beaufort, Comté, Emmental, and Saint-Paulin.
