Bourgogne 2018, an ideal vintage

The 2018 vintage put a smile on the face of Bourgogne winemakers. Find out why.
Continuing the upturn seen in 2017, the Bourgogne wine sector enjoyed another good harvest this year, with volumes that will satisfy market demand. But besides the quantity, the wines promise an exceptional vintage.

The vines had built up their reserves during winter, and enjoyed a warm, dry spring, with budburst in early April, giving them a head start that they kept right up until the harvests. This set a rapid pace for those working in the vines.

Summer was hot and dry, with a few episodes of hail. However, damage was minimal, and ripening progressed well. In the last 10 days of August, with the weather remaining fine, the first grapes were brought in. Given that dates for flowering and figures for rainfall and temperature varied a great deal from one area to another, the harvests continued in places up until the last week of September.

Many winemakers believe they won’t experience such a favorable year for a long time to come.

The total volume is estimated to be 1.8 million hectoliters (source: BIVB survey of 467 companies), which equates to:
   -   A full harvest for all white AOCs, especially in Chablis and the Mâconnais, which were impacted by weather incidents in 2017
   -   Volume comparable to 2017 for red wines
   -   Increased production for Crémant de Bourgogne wines, which should allow them to meet growing demand

The excellent figures from the recent Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction underscore this initial impression. Revenue from the sale was up nearly 19 % on 2017, confirming buyer interest in this vintage.
