Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction 2018 - © BIVB / Aurélien Ibanez

The 158th Hospices de Beaune wine auction is coming soon!

Every year, the Hospices de Beaune hosts the celebrated and historic wine auction on the third Sunday in November.

On Sunday 18 November, 828 traditional Bourguignon 228-liter barrels, or pièces, will be auctioned. This record number comprises 197 pièces of white wine and 631 of red. The highpoint of the event will be the sale of the “Pièce des Présidents”, the profits from which will be donated to two charitable institutions.
The first of these is the Institut Pasteur, which carries out medical research and is represented at the sale by French actress Nathalie Baye and French novelist Erik Orsenna.
The second is the Asmae charity, which continues the work of French nun Sister Emmanuelle, helping underpriviledged children around the world. It will be represented at the auction by French actress Alice Taglioni. The wine in the Pièce des Présidents is a Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi, which should encourage buyers to dig deep into their pockets!

The vineyards of the Hôtel-Dieu estate come from numerous donations and help raise money for the charitable works of the Hospices de Beaune, such as upgrading care equipment, modernizing infrastructure, and conservation of historic monuments, including the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune. Since 1945, the Hospices has been supporting one or more other charities each year. The profits raised from the sale of one barrel of wine (or more, depending on the year), known as the “Pièce des Présidents”, go to this cause. Its sale is usually the highpoint of the auction.
The négociants of the Bourgogne wine region play the role of intermediaries for buyers in this special sale. They will then age these wines until bottling, typically 18 month after the event.

In parallel to the action at the Hospices, the 146th Fête des Grands Vins de Bourgogne offers the chance to taste a vast range of Bourgogne appellations in the presence of winemakers, at the Palais des Congrès in Beaune. This exceptional tasting event is reserved for press and professionals on Friday, and open to the general public on Saturday and Sunday.

For the press, several special events are scheduled, including tastings, industry press conference, 20 years of the Bouzeron appellation, etc. An invitation will be sent to you in mid-October, but in the meantime, you can find full details in our online press room.

Many other events are also scheduled for visitors during the three days, making this a great occasion to (re)discover the conviviality of the Bourgogne region.
