Bourgogne wines: Fast flowering

The year 2021 is full of surprises for the winegrowers.

What's going on in Bourgogne ?

The year 2021 still has plenty of surprises in store for winegrowers, both good and bad. Fortunately, flowering, which suddenly happened in mid-June, is in the first category.

After May, which was cooler and wetter than usual, temperatures returned to their seasonal norms at the start of June. Then on 8 June, they really took off, rising way above the average.
Flowering then happened very quickly, thanks to the hot and dry weather. The mid-flowering stage was reached around the same time as in 2019; between 13 June for the Chardonnay in the Mâconnais and 18 June for the Pinot Noir on the Côte de Nuits.

The rhythm was fast, but flowering was uneven across the region. This stage in the vine’s development, which is critical to the future harvest, is also the most sensitive in the growth cycle. The winegrowers must wait a little longer to find out how much the frost and bad weather has impacted flowering and as a consequence, future yields.

Temperatures remained high which led to very fast vegetation growth, allowing the 2021 vintage to make up for some of the time lost between April and May. And if this rhythm continues, some are already talking about a mid-September harvest.
