Horizon Hautes-Côtes: a groundbreaking high-altitude vineyard project

Today experiencing strong growth, the Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune and Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits appellations embody a collective dynamic within the Bourgogne vineyard.

Driven by controlled development and a long-term vision, they affirm their commitment to:

  • wine quality
  • the preservation of emblematic high-altitude landscapes
  • biodiversity
  • adaptation to climate change

Initiated by the Hautes-Côtes ODG, and in collaboration with numerous technical partners, “Horizon Hautes-Côtes” is a large-scale mapping project aimed at reconciling vineyard development with respect for the land and the environment.

Mapping as a key decision-making tool

As a central tool, mapping will combine geological, climatic, environmental, and regulatory data to establish a shared diagnosis of the territory. It will provide winegrowers and local stakeholders with a decision-support tool to identify areas to prioritize, those to preserve, and to sustainably guide vineyard development.

This approach will notably make it possible to:

  • anticipate the impacts of climate change
  • protect sensitive areas (Natura 2000 sites, forests, calcareous grasslands)
  • preserve landscapes and water resources
  • guide future plantings toward the most suitable terroirs

A two-phase rollout

The project is structured in two main stages:
1. A pilot phase (2025–2026)
2 municipalities: Nantoux and Meloisey
1,550 hectares studied
Objective: test the methodology and initiate stakeholder consultation

2. A full-scale rollout (2026–2027)
47 municipalities involved
25,000 hectares studied
Objective: build a comprehensive vision of the Hautes-Côtes vineyard

A large-scale collective project

Horizon Hautes-Côtes brings together a broad ecosystem of stakeholders:

  • wine institutions
  • technical and scientific experts
  • local authorities
  • environmental stakeholders

All share the same ambition: to reconcile economic development, wine quality, and territorial preservation. With Horizon Hautes-Côtes, Bourgogne’s high-altitude vineyard asserts its role as a territory of innovation.

THE HAUTES-CÔTES: A VINEYARD ON THE RISE

Located to the west of the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, on predominantly clay-limestone soils reaching up to 450 meters in altitude, the Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune and Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits appellations stand out for:
- the freshness and brightness of their wines
- an appealing, authentic, and immediately approachable profile
- a rare level of accessibility in Bourgogne

In a context where Bourgogne appellations are becoming increasingly premium, the Hautes-Côtes remain one of the last strongholds where pleasure is still within reach. Their wines—particularly those awarded at the 2025 Hautes-Côtes Wine Excellence Awards—offer an especially attractive quality-to-price ratio.
