Domaine Laroche launches in 2022 a nesting box

09/03/2022

Domaine Laroche

As one of the first estates in Bourgogne to have been certified HVE 3, the philosophy of Domaine Laroche goes far beyond a simple technical specification. As a partner of the LPO (League for the Protection of Birds) for the past 6 years, a program to install nesting boxes has been set up in vineyards preserved from sustained human activity. This is the case, for example, of the plots of land in the Chablis Appellation , in the Vaudevey valley. Surrounded by woodland, the location is ideal to an introduction program in favour of the Athena owl. This owl used to live in the region and contributed to the ecological balance of the area. Its come-back will benefit the vines by protecting them from small pests.

New measures have been approved through the project « Lands and Wings » launched in 2021. « A dozen nesting boxes have been installed for new species such as the Robin Redbreast , the Blue Tit and the Great Tit to fight against bud-eating and preserve biodiversity », says Amélie Tupinier, in charge of sustainable viticulture at Domaine Laroche.

To celebrate these 6 years of partnership, Laroche has created a nesting box to highligh its estate wines. The principle? A two-in-one box: it protects the wine and once the bottle is opened it becomes a nesting box by adding the cork. This nesting box was especially designed for Tits, that you can find in your gardens and on your balconies in France and in Europe.

Useful information to install the nesting box:
Between 1.5 m and 3 m high
South-East to East orientation
Avoid direct sunshine
To be installed from February onwards for occupation from March to July

This nesting wooden box is especially available with the Chablis Saint Martin, the emblematic cuvee of the estate in Chablis villages. It is a blend of the best Chablis parcels among which 15% are matured in 55 HL casks and 228 L barrels, the rest in stainless steel tanks. Its name pays tribute to Obediencerie of Chablis, property of the Domaine Laroche, which sheltered the relics of the eponymous Patron Saint.
