THE TRADITIONAL WAY OF SELLING WINE IN BARRELS

The savoir-faire of Ludivine Griveau and of the Hospices de Beaune resulted in offering 828 barrels at auction (compared to 787 in 2017), including the Pièce des Présidents which was comprised of two barrels this year. After a 7-hour auction, the Hospices de Beaune and Christie’s are pleased to announce a total of €14,2M/£12,6M/,1M the best result registered for this sale despite the highest volume ever offered.

François Poher, Director of the Hospices de Beaune: On 10 November 1918, the Hospices de Beaune wine sale broke all records, encouraged by the peace celebration but also thanks to a remarkable harvest in quantity and quality. A century later, the sale reached new records. Every day, the hospitals of the Hospices de Beaune are thriving to achieve excellence. This is based on more than five centuries of commitment of women and men in favour of this important cause. The result of this sale will give us the possibility to invest for the patients and to innovate.

Ludivine Griveau, vineyard-manager and wine-maker of the domaine declared: We are delighted with these very good results which celebrated the 2018 vintage. The 828 barrels offered once again a vintage which combined quality and quantity. I am convinced that this vintage will deliver great wines and I want to thank especially the vineyard employees who followed closely my instructions and the Direction of the Hospices de Beaune which trusted me all through the year.

Since 2005, Christie’s has partnered with the Hospices de Beaune, together organising not only the yearly sale in Burgundy, but also arranging dinners and tastings of the Domaine’s wines all around the globe since 2010. This year again, Christie’s and the Hospices de Beaune teams traveled internationally to organise 25 events from Singapore to London and from Shanghai to Los Angeles, including more than 900 people.

Agathe de Saint Céran, specialist in charge of the Beaune sale and Jasper Morris, Master of Wine and consultant for Christie’s: The 2018 edition of the Hospices de Beaune sale, best performance in the history of this charity sale, went beyond our expectations. Our collaboration with Ludivine Griveau has been a great success and we have witnessed, this year again, the birth of this beautiful vintage in reds and whites. These wines were greatly received by the generous international wine lovers and professionals who support this charity sale. This year, 69% of the barrels were acquired by the négociants and 31% by private buyers (by value) coming from Europe (38,3%), Asia (55%), and the United States of America (6,7%).

THE PRESIDENT’S BARREL SOLD FOR 230,000 euros
Since 1978, the Hospices de Beaune have each year donated one or more barrels, known as the Pièce des Présidents, to be auctioned for carefully selected charitable purposes. From the 1945 vintage onwards, one or more Honorary Presidents have presided over each wine sale. This year, the Pièce des Présidents, was composed by two barrels: a Corton Grand-Cru – Clos du Roi and a Meursault Premier Cru Les Genevrières, bought by Anima Vinum and Alberic Bichot with his Canadian client. Nathalie Baye and Erik Orsenna represented the Pasteur Institut, Emmanuelle Béart the BAB association, and Pascal Elbé the ASMAE association.

Bourgogne Wine Merchants top contributors to charity auction

The Bourgogne wine houses proclaim their everlasting support for the Hospices de Beaune.

The 158th Hospices de Beaune wine auction broke all records on Sunday, raising 14,187,150 euros – a 25% increase over last year.

Proud to be the most important contributors to the auction, the Bourgogne wine merchants successfully bid on 75% of the auctioned barrels.

Through this auction, they proved their profound commitment to the Beaune hospital, which will be able to invest the funds to further modernize its facilities and better care for sick people in the region.

The favorable outcome of the sale also shows that the 2018 vintage will prove to be a commercial success and the Bourgogne wine houses will be able to reinforce yet again the image of Bourgogne wines as a synonym for excellence and the French way of life, admired throughout the world.
