The Hospices Civils de Beaune pledges its commitment to healthy ageing

05/05/2023

Vente des Vins Beaune 2023

The 163rd Hospices de Beaune wine sale will be held on Sunday 19 November 2023 in the Halles de Beaune. On the occasion of the sale of this year’s Charity barrel, also known as the Pièce des Présidents (Presidents’ barrel), the Hospices Civils de Beaune is pledging its commitment in support of healthy ageing, in response to an awareness of and concern about this public health priority.

Through the proceeds of the sale of this unique barrel of wine, the Hospices Civils de Beaune wishes to support one or more associations involved in projects preventing the loss of, and maintaining, independence among the elderly – via projects focusing on the prevention of any such loss of independence, and actions aimed at strengthening older people’s skills and supporting their health and quality of life at home.

What is the Pièce des Présidents (Presidents’ Barrel)?

Since 1945, the charitable nature of the Hospices de Beaune wine sale has remained at the forefront of the renowned annual event. An exceptional and unique barrel of wine, the Charity barrel, will be sold for the benefit of one or several associations. Most often it is a Grand Cru produced from the year's harvest from one of the Hospices de Beaune estate’s highly prized terroirs.

ABOUT HOSPICES CIVILS DE BEAUNE

The history of the Hospices Civils de Beaune began in 1443 when Nicolas Rolin and Guigone de Salins decided to build a hospital: the Hôtel-Dieu. The founders were charitable and patronising, thus establishing a tradition that has enabled the Hospices de Beaune to survive throughout history in exceptional conditions. Today, the Hospices Civils de Beaune includes the Beaune hospital centre, and the hospitals of Arnay-le-Duc, Seurre and Nuits-St-Georges. The Hospices Civils de Beaune is the support establishment of the Groupement Hospitalier de Territoire du Sud Côte-d'Or.

The originality of this hospital institution lies in the importance and nature of its heritage, which consists of a historic monument, the 15th century Hôtel-Dieu, which has not received patients or elderly residents since the early 1980s, and a prestigious 60-hectare vineyard in Beaune of the best Burgundy appellations. All these vineyards come from bequests and donations, and their production is sold each year at auction on the third Sunday of November, as part of the most famous charity sale in the world. Thus, through its heritage, this hospital institution plays a leading role in the two major activities of Beaune and its region: tourism and wine.

The auction, which can include more than 500 lots, is the most famous and oldest charity wine auction in the world (1859). The proceeds of this sale are reserved for the maintenance of the hospital's heritage and the modernisation of its equipment and buildings. In keeping with its founding values, the Hospices Civils de Beaune supports one or more charities each year by donating the profits from the sale of a piece of wine, known as a "Pièce de Charité".
