All eyes on Beaune for the 156th Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction

On Sunday 20 November, the 156th Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction will take place, one of the world’s most celebrated charity fund-raising events. Since 2005, auction house Christie's has lent its expertise to the Hospices de Beaune to give the sale greater international prestige. Négociants in the Bourgogne wine region also play a key role as intermediaries, inviting buyers for whom they will then age the wines until they are bottled, on average around 18 months.

Along with the gathering of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin at the Clos de Vougeot on the Saturday evening, and the renowned Paulée de Meursault on Monday, Sunday’s wine auction is the centerpiece of the Trois Glorieuses, the three glorious days which, for more than 150 years, have marked the end of the wine-growing season in the Bourgogne region.

The money raised during the auction goes to fund the Hospices de Beaune’s charitable works: Including healthcare equipment, modernizing infrastructure, and conservation of historical monuments, including the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune. What’s more, since 1945, the Hospices auction traditionally supports one or more charitable organizations, represented by well-known figures. The profits from the sale of one or more barrels depending on the year – known as the pièces des Présidents – are donated to these causes. This lot is the highpoint of the auction.

In parallel to the official celebrations, the general public can participate in a vast tasting event as part of the 144th Fête des Grands Vins de Bourgogne in the Palais des Congrès, or else head out to discover the estates and wine merchants who open their doors over the weekend.

From Friday 18 to Monday 21 November, many events are lined up for the media, market influencers, and the general public, all making a wonderful occasion to (re)discover the region’s conviviality!

Market influencers in particular should attend the tasting event on 18 November for wines from across the Bourgogne wine region on the first day of the 144th Fête des Grands Vins de Bourgogne in Palais des Congrès (from 9am).

We recently received the sad news that Antoine Jacquet, Director of the Hospices de Beaune, has died aged 64. The weekend schedule will not be modified, but all those in attendance will have in their thoughts the valuable contribution made by the man who oversaw the Hôtel-Dieu and the Hospices wine estate for 28 years.

In 2016, Bourgogne wines regain share in some markets

The two most recent vintages, 2014 and 2015, have helped to build up the overall stock of available wine. This renewed stock is encouraging a resurgence in sales in certain markets, as demonstrated by export figures for the first seven months of 2016.

Salon VinoVision - Paris, 12 to 14 February 2017

The first large-scale tradeshow in Paris dedicated to wines from northerly regions

VinoVision Paris has taken its place as a major event in the international wine trade calendar. All France’s northerly wine regions will be represented, with more than 330 exhibitors: Bourgogne, Alsace, Beaujolais, Bugey, Champagne, Jura, Savoie, and Val de Loire. Foreign producers from cool-climate wine regions will also be present at the show, including Germany, Austria, England, Oregon, and New Zealand.

This salon offers a new vision of wine, inspired by demand from French and international buyers looking for accessible wines from prestige appellations, and provides a response to new modes in consumption, from gastronomy to everyday pleasures.

The global appeal of Paris and its accessibility will readily attract buyers, and more than 10,000 French and international specialists from various distribution circuits in the wine sector are expected (import/export, bar-hotel-restaurant, specialist wine stores, supermarket, and e-commerce), making VinoVision Paris a key event for growth, both in France and at export.

VinoVision Paris is a unique occasion to discover or rediscover the wealth and diversity of the wines from these regions:

  • More than 70% of French AOC wines come from northerly regions
  • Exceptional red wines with wide diversity, going from easy-drinking everyday wines to prestigious appellations with worldwide reputations; many are emblematic single-varietal wines from terroirs that have been classified as part of UNESCO World Heritage
  • White and sparkling wines: 40% of French wine sold worldwide is either white or sparkling. 80% of French white wine is produced in northerly regions

Today’s wine-drinkers appreciate these fine, elegant, crisp, mineral wines.
